Jay Gatz Releases new single

Jay Gatz is a multi-faceted artist, hip hop lyricist and Entrepreneur. Born in Boston, and raised in Randolph, he began rapping and producing mixtapes at the age of seven, and it was at the age of 11 when he recorded his first mixtape on a karaoke machine and the name was given to him metaphorically referring to the book, The Great Gatsby. In 2018, Gatz released his first official project, The Real Jay Gatz independently through tunecore, and has been doing so through his Bodega Muzik Group, LLC. umbrella every since.Growing up in Randolph was a unique experience to me because We moved there at a time that felt like a renaissance.

The town had a long Jewish historic history, and at that time a lot of people of color and first generation immigrants was moving there for the first time. All the families that were trying to escape the inner city traumas, and give their kids better lives all relocated to this community as well as Brockton. The town essentially adopted its own new traumas and it can be harder to make it outta there because it’s not a major city like Boston or Brockton.

I must say there are a lot more opportunities now then there was 10 - 15 years ago.The police department there also did a lot of profiling that seemed out of being bored. Unlike the inner city, crime doesn’t take place there as often, leaving a lot of downtime for officers to attempt to “make a case,” out of nothing. Simple traffic stops can lead to 3 and 4 cop cars pulling you over and harassing you at once. They had their ways of causing trauma within the community, and a lot of those times they were usually over excessive.

Tell us about your latest single, and tribute to your grandmother. What is the name of the single?, how can we hear it?, and will it be on your up and coming project?

Yeah my latest single is called, “Shirley,” and as you mentioned is a tribute to my late Grandmother. For anybody that knows me, knows my grandmother and my aunt has always been more of a mother to me than my actual biological mother growing up. I spent almost every second of everyday as a child with her. I spent everyday of my adult years taking care of her in every way possible. Without these two “Shirley’s” I would’ve been given to a foster family at birth. These two took me under their wings at two days old, so it crushed me losing her.You can hear the single on all digital streaming platforms now and on thanksgiving, the single WILL be opening my next project, Good Food: Plate 2.

When is your album release party and how can people purchase tickets and what can we expect to hear from the new album?

My album release party is going to be Black Friday, November 27th 2021 at The Rockwell in Somerville (Davis Square.) Fans can purchase their tickets online via event bright:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/jay-gatz-album-release-show-tickets-196787505727 You can expect to hear a mixture of dancehall and hip hop, with a little r&b and afrobeat mixed in. In comparison to my last album “Fireflies,” this album is definitely my “happy place.” You can still expect to hear about my life, but more from a place of love.

How does it feel to be headlining your first show and release party that has to be exciting.

Stressful but exciting. I always wanted to do a 45-min or a hour set so this is definitely something I’m looking forward too. I’ll be able to go through a few of my old classics and introduce some of the new. I feel like with being such a versatile artist, any set under 20 mins feels like a disservice because there’s usually more vibes that can still be explored.I’m also used to feeling more like the surprise performance than the main attraction so that’s also good.

What was the inspiration behind the name "Good Food Plate 2 and did you ever consider naming it something else before you choose that name?

The inspiration behind the title, “Good Food,” came back in 2017, when I wanted to make an album that made the listener feel the way they felt after eating a good meal or Good Food. It usually puts a big smile or peoples faces, or puts them in a great mood. It can also cause the itis and have you sleep on me once again. The lead single on that album became my most streamed song and most successful song at the time feeling like I struck fire. Up until that moment I have never tried making dancehall or afrobeat songs. My dad was from Trinidad and I’ve never really embraced my culture at that point and I wanted too.

A girl I was dating at the time was from Guyana, and influenced me to embrace this side. So I figured what better way to embrace my fathers culture, give the people what they want, and show my appreciation to her for suggesting that this new flame to me.So I decided to make an album with all dancehall and afrobeat songs like Ana Conda, and was going to name it, “Happy Place,” but by the time I was done, life continued to happen, causing me to make songs like, “Dead 2 Me and I Won’t Trip” that aren’t really from a happy place. That’s when I decided I that this album was more like a second helping of the first album. When you’re making seconds you usually only add the food you liked the most or the food you want to eat more of. That’s what I did with this album, “Ana Conda and Lick Ya Lipz,” was like the yams and Mac that a lot of people wanted a second plate of.

Is there anyone you would love to work with in the industry and why? what would you love to learn from them in the process?

50 Cent has always been my idol or person I’d love to have as a mentor. LL Cool J too. I just wouldn’t be who I am without either of them. 50 showed me that you can be from a tough background and still attain mainstream success. That you can make Many Men AND Candy Shop. While LL taught me the importance of being vulnerable and honest with your feelings and emotions. That you can still love passionately and knock someone out when your mama tell you too.I would love to work with Shenseea, Mishlawi, Richie Campbell, or even a goat like Vybez Cartel.

They’re all on different levels and would all have different various advice to put me on game with. Their own perspectives, their own personal battles. They all also would leave a very generous stamp or co-sign I would need to solidify me in those genres. On the r&b side, I’d love to work with Sammy, the one who sung “I like it.” He’s been in the game forever and probably has a lifetime of knowledge and experiences. Those are the people I wanna learn from. Not just the successful ones. I wanna learn from Music Soulchild and the Trey Songz just as much as I wanna learn from Sir and Giveon.

What made you want to start a clothing line? what is the name of your brand and what are your 5 year goals for your clothing brand?

Recognizing the music business and understanding the power of a physical product is what made me wanna start TCMC. The Corner Market Clothing is an extension of Bodega Muzik Group that handles the sales of merchandise manufactured and distributed through Kin Custom. With major labels bundling sales this was a way to join in once BMG finds a parent label.

With clothes or merchandise you have a physical item from a artist you may love, opposed to just a digital song. You can now express yourself in ways that align with the artist in ways you may not have been able to before. That and I may not want to be an artist forever. So having TCMC allows me ways to accrue revenue outside of music. That and I honestly prefer wearing my own clothes and being branded in my own way.

What are some of the things that you learned as a business owner that you can pass on to someone else?

That if you don’t push your brand nobody else will. That it’s your responsibility to get the product in front of the eyes of the buying consumer. That your business will only be as big as you make it, if your lucky. That and Rome wasn’t built in a day.

How does it feel to be the highest streamed video on youtube for fireflies?

I don’t think I am, but if I was I would feel proud. That I’ve made an accomplishment. I wouldn’t sweat it too much though cause I know I still have a longggg way to go. That would be like a small drop in a big bucket.

Who are you outside of music and business? Do you have any other interests?

Outside of all this I’m Just Jordan. Whenever they wanna reboot that show I’ll be for it. I need my own show lol I’m goofy outside of all this. I enjoy cracking jokes and having fun. Making the best out of life.I’m passionate about fitness and working out too. I’m considering getting into body building to compete just to check it off my lists but I am also currently training to become a firefighter.I also have a lot of interests in acting as well. Definitely something I would like to try down the line in the future.

What's next?

Next, I would like to headline my first tour. Start with like 8 cities or so.That and just continue the roll out of Good Food: Plate 2. More videos, more shows, more interviews, & more content!
